WEBQUEST: DREAM INTERPRETATION


Part I: Dream Symbols 
Directions: Go to http://www.dreamdoctor.com/, click on the “Dream Dictionary” and answer the following questions.
1.        In dreams, what is the significance of a monster?


2.        In dreams, what is the significance of a bridge?


3.        What is the significance of personal nudity in dreams?


4.        Pick any other FOUR dream symbols that are of interest to you (and are appropriate) and indicate below what their meanings are.


5.        Do you believe that dream symbols are universal? Explain.
Part II: Dream Interpretation
1.        First, describe a vivid dream that you can remember from your past.  It should be vivid enough that you can write 3-4 COMPLETE SENTENCES to describe it. Remember, according to Freud, this is the dream’s manifest content.

2.        Using the “Dream Dictionary” and “Dream Interpretation” sections, attempt to interpret your dream in 3-4 COMPLETE SENTENCES. Remember, according to Freud this is the dream’s latent content.


Part III:  Reflection

Directions: Answer the following questions in COMPLETE SENTENCES.

1.        This webquest was designed to help you learn more about Sigmund Freud’s Wish Fulfillment Theory of dreams. Including this theory and the others discussed in class (Cognitive-Problem Solving, Activation-Synthesis, Information Processing and Physiological Function), which do you believe to be the most valid?  Why? (1 Paragraph) 

2.        Which of these theories to you believe to be the least valid? Why?


Part VI:  Application 

Directions: Ezekiel, a rising high school freshman, has the following dream the night before school starts. After reading his dream, attempt to interpret/describe the function of Ezekiel’s dream using the theories listed below.

Ezekiel’s dream“I dreamt that I showed up for my first day of high school and I had no idea where to go. I was lost and I kept looking at my watch, realizing that I was already late. Whenever I asked for directions, people would laugh at me.  Then, suddenly I was naked and people were laughing even harder.  I started crying and went home where my mom told me that I was a failure and that I’d never amount to anything if I couldn’t even get to school on time.  I woke up shaking and trembling because it felt so real.”
